Backyard Bunkhouse
The owners had an older rambler with limited space and a large lot. They were in need of a space for the kids to hang out. The new bunkhouse offers a less expensive solution to adding on to the existing house while creating a versatile multi-use “away” space that could also serve as a future art studio, tiki bar, or she shed. The goal was to create a modern structure that is integrated into the backyard with interesting design elements to make it look less like a typical shed. It is located on the edge of the woods adjacent to the fire pit so it is visible from the house while being nestled into the existing tree line. The dark exterior offers a modern vibe that contrasts and accentuates the cedar ceiling. The angled wall corners, slat walls, and tight siding exposures create a sculptural structure rich in textures and details that can be appreciated as viewed from the house as well as up close. The slat walls, inspired by rural corn cribs, and deep overhangs create a protected wood storage area. The space has a heat pump and AC for year round use. The interiors feature durable paneled walls, two upper maple bunks with wall ladders and space below for sofas and seating. It can comfortably sleep five.
